More than a hundred years ago, Theodor Althoff opened a department store on the Limbecker Platz square that soon became the leading "Provinzial" department store in the western region of Germany. After a change in ownership in 1963, the impressive building then became the central department store of Karstadt AG. Following extension and modernisation over the years, the complex today still bears witness to the rich trading tradition of this location. The plans that have been in the pipeline for some time to develop the entire area into a giant shopping center together with the central Karstadt store and Karstadt-Sport have been put into practice.
The Limbecker Platz shopping center is a superlative project that lends a true cosmopolitan flair to the Ruhr region. With a net area of around 70,000 square metres and 200 shops, it is one of the largest downtown shopping centers in Germany. The Center includes a department store, a sport shop, a food court, service outlets and restaurants/cafés. The Limbecker Platz complex boasts the highest number of fashion outlets in a single shopping center and houses all the well-known chains. But the Limbecker Platz is not just the premier fashion magnet in Germany; it also showcases all the other facets of modern urban life. The 200 shops combine to form a peerless branch mix. The Karstadt-Weltstadthaus store measures a massive 20,000 square metres, and a further 4,000 square metres for the Karstadt-Sport outlet.
Shopping is more than just buying goods and products – it is an all-round event. The center is the perfect place to go for breakfast, lunch and dinner, whether in the form of a snack or an exquisite meal at a top restaurant. There is also a large food court as well as a dozen cafés and restaurants offering something for everyone.
The architecture is incomparable: an elegant, transparent and metropolitan facade on the outside, and a unique ambience and atmosphere on the inside – the complex heralds a new era for the city of Essen. Three kilometres of shop window front, attractive areas to sit down and relax, water features, stages and venues for artistic performances make for a totally new shopping experience. Specially designed stages provide the ideal setting for outstanding events like concerts, fashion shows or sports activities:
In the next couple of years you will see a unique example of architecture in building progress. One of the striking features of the facade, which was designed by munich's star architect Professor Gunter Henn, is the integral "sequin arches", which make the building stand out both during the day and at night.
