ECE and STRABAG Real Estate Lay Foundation Stone for New Hotel Building in MesseCity Cologne

With West 4, construction of the fourth building in MesseCity Cologne begins / Hotel tenants Adina and Motel One are projected to move in during 2020

In the presence of a number of guests, project partners ECE and STRABAG Real Estate (SRE) today laid the foundation stone for the West 4 group of hotels within the large-scale MesseCity Cologne project. The building has been leased to the Motel One group and Adina Apartment Hotels. The ceremony marking the symbolic laying of the first stone was attended by key figures involved at both City and project level as well as future tenants. Guests included Henriette Reker, Mayor  of the City of Cologne, Rainer M. Schäfer, Managing Director of SRE, Matthias Niemeyer, Head of Development Europe Adina Germany Holding GmbH & Co. KG, Philippe Weyland, Managing Director Motel One GmbH, and Torsten Kuttig, Director of Development ECE Projektmanagement.

An Outstanding Hotel Location

A total of 308 rooms and 171 studios and apartments are planned for the hotel building, the striking facade of which has been designed by architectural firm Gerkan, Marg und Partner. The seven-story property is being built in the heart of MesseCity Cologne – the city’s new trade fair hub – right next to the “Messebalkon” plaza.  This massive new stepped area will create a direct access route between the Cologne Messe/Deutz station, used by ICE intercity rail services, and the entrance to the trade fair site. The location therefore  benefits from excellent transport connections and its close proximity to koelnmesse.

The general contractor seeing through the turnkey project to fruition is Ed.Züblin AG, which started work in May 2018. Excavation operations have now been completed, with construction of the basement sections underway since August. Progress is expected to be made on the upper floors from March 2019 onwards. Handover to the hotel operators is projected to start in August 2020.

Transforming the ‘Wrong Side’ of the City into the ‘Chic Side’

“Until recently, the Deutz neighborhood on the right bank of the Rhine was known as the ‘wrong side’ of Cologne. With our comprehensive development, we are helping to ensure that it finally becomes the ‘chic side’ of the city. As well as the urban design and architectural plans, our tenants will play a major part in bringing life to the new MesseCity business district,” said SRE Managing Director Rainer-Maria Schäfer, as he thanked all those involved in the project.

MesseCity Managing Director Torsten Kuttig is very happy with way the overall project is progressing. He commented, “With the construction of the hotel building, we are adhering to our ambitious schedule for completing the first phase of the new urban district, which as a result is continuing to develop in terms of its architectural and urban quality, significantly enriching the metropolitan image of Cologne in this prominent location next to koelnmesse.”

Matthias Niemeyer, Head of Development Europe Adina Germany Holding GmbH & Co. KG, had the following to say: “We are delighted to be opening up Cologne as another top location for Adina. This first Adina Hotel in North Rhine-Westphalia – our tenth in Germany – is a further milestone in our growth across Europe. We are certain that, as a premium brand in the apartment hotel sector, we are offering attractive accommodation for trade fair visitors, those vacationing in the city, and also families with children, thanks to our comprehensive full-service hotel offering.”

Marketing of MesseCity Cologne East now under way

With the MesseCity Cologne project, ECE and SRE are creating a vital business district situated directly between the southern entrance of the koelnmesse trade fair site and the Cologne Messe/Deutz station, used by ICE intercity rail services. There are plans to construct a total of 135,000 m² overall floor space on the 5.4-hectare site by 2023. The area is divided between six buildings, covering a mixed range of uses including offices, hotels, food and beverage outlets, small-scale retail offerings, and leisure facilities.

For West 1-3, the first three office properties, structural works were recently completed. Building work is expected to be finished by 2019, at which point Zurich Insurance will haven taken occupancy of much of the office space. In parallel to the progress with construction, project partners ECE and SRE have started work on marketing and on targeting potential users for the properties involved in the second building phase (construction sites Ost 1 and Ost 2). In the eastern section of MesseCity, there are plans for a further office tower, approximately 60 meters  in height, and a mixed-used office and hotel complex, offering around 18,500 m² and 26,000 m² of rental space respectively. Full information about the whole project and the floorspace available can be found by visiting www.messecity-koeln.de.

Colorful Cranes over Cologne

A particular highlight of the MesseCity site is the sight of four cranes that have been artfully modified to project a colorful light display. Especially now, as the nights start to draw in, this creates a dramatic effect over the site. In August, the West 1-3 construction site at MesseCity formed part of the spectacular light show project “Light it up!”, initiated by the City of Cologne to mark the tenth anniversary of the computer and video game fair “Gamescom.” To create this, the Hamburg theater producer and light artist Michael Batz illuminated, in color, the entire area from the Deutzer Brücke to the Zoobrücke bridges on both sides of the Rhine, including the cranes on the MesseCity site, which continue to shine out colorfully even after the Gamescom.
