The “Man of the Century” will turn 102: tomorrow, the entrepreneur and patron Prof. Dr. h.c. Werner Otto will celebrate his birthday with his family in Berlin. Two years after the celebration of his 100th birthday and the awarding of the honorary citizenship of Berlin, Werner Otto is still in good health. He is regarded as one of the most remarkable and successful personalities of the social market economy.
On time for his 102nd birthday, a new webpage was launched under www.werner-otto.info, telling his biography and providing information on his social commitment, numerous photos as well as film and audio material.
The founder of the Otto Versand mail ordering company (today Otto Group) and ECE as well as numerous other companies all over the world is one of the few still living trade pioneers, who had considerable influence on the Federal Republic’s economic, socio-political and social development due to their visionary power, distinctive inventiveness, and entrepreneurial courage. It was him who brought the idea of shopping centers from the USA to Germany.
Both the Otto Group (founded in 1949) as well as ECE (founded in 1965) are still owned by the Otto family and are the responsibility of Werner Otto’s sons Dr. Michael Otto (Chairman of the Otto Group Supervisory Board) and Alexander Otto (CEO of ECE).
