The building construction work for Leverkusen’s new city center has begun: On Thursday, June 12, 2008, Lord Mayor Ernst Küchler performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Rathaus-Galerie on Friedrich-Ebert-Platz. Following plans worked out by ECE, an elegant shopping center will be built right in the city center of Leverkusen-Wiesdorf. It will comprise about 22,600 square meters of retail space for about 110 specialty stores, cafés, and restaurants which will be located on three levels, inviting visitors to take a stroll. The big glass rotunda above the shopping center represents the architectural highlight of the Rathaus-Galerie. On two additional floors with approximately 5.000 square meters, municipal offices will be accommodated. Moreover, about 500 parking spaces spread over two parking floors are planned. Opening of the Rathaus-Galerie is scheduled for the spring of 2010. ECE is expecting a daily number of 30,000 visitors and envisages the creation of 950 jobs. There are approximately 400,000 people living in the catchment area of the Rathaus-Galerie. The investor in this 200 million euro project is Credit Suisse Asset Management Immobilien KAG mbH.
