06/17/2008: Ground breaking ceremony for the Rhein-Galerie Ludwigshafen

Another landmark reached in the urban development policy of Ludwigshafen

With today’s ground breaking ceremony, the Lord Mayor of Ludwigshafen Eva Lohse and ECE representatives initiated the commencement of the construction work on the local large-scale project Rhein-Galerie Ludwigshafen. Until autumn 2010, a new inner city quarter is to be developed on the grounds of the former customs port, which is located directly on the bank of the Rhine. It will comprise an exceptionally designed shopping center with a retail space of approximately 30.000 square meters as well as a Rhine promenade of approximately 25.000 square meters. The main focus in the sectoral mix of the Rhein Galerie will be on the textiles sector, with assortments ranging from the middle to the upper segment. However, there will also be food stores, drugstores and a big bookstore, among other providers. The historic wharf hall will be preserved and refurbished. Moreover, within the context of a second construction phase, a business hotel in the three or four star category with up to 180 rooms is planned. The investment volume for the Rhein-Galerie Ludwigshafen will amount to about 220 million euros.
