Facts and figures

The construction of the Volksbank Arena to the north of the Color Line Arena was the kick-off project for the new sports park at the Volkspark location in the Altona district of Hamburg. The principal for this project is the nonprofit  "Alexander Otto Sports Foundation". The Volksbank Arena was built on the site of the "Grey" parking lot. The arena with a total area of around 7,000 m² comprises an ice-rink and a ball sports area as well as several two-storey ancillary buildings built in a straight line between the two. A central access route into the Color Line Arena was created at the same level on the roofs of the ancillary rooms. A generously dimensioned stairway installation leads up to this level from the parking lot and forms the entrance to the Color Line Arena – ensuring a structural and functional link between the two arenas. The roof areas was designed to serve as a fifth facade and will be colorfully illuminated when darkness falls. Visitors  enter the stadium via the "Grey" parking area.

The utilization concept is geared towards providing facilities for mass-participation, amateur and professional sports as well as sports-related activities (e.g. fan shop, cafés/restaurants). The Hamburg Freezers ice hockey team and the HSV Handball club  train in the Volksbank Arena. This means the two popular Hamburg clubs have a new home in the Volkspark location near to the stadium where they play their competitive games.

The ice sports rink with an area of around 2,700 m² serves as a venue for public ice-skating, ice hockey, ice skating, ice dancing, short track and ice-shooting. A permanent grandstand provides seating for around 300 spectators.

The ball sports area measuring around 1,200 m² offers facilities for competitive sports like handball, volleyball, basketball, indoor soccer and badminton. As a result, the new Volksbank Arena does not only provide additional training options for clubs and professional ice and ball sports teams but also serves as an ice-rink for the general public. The superb training facilities also underpin the status of the Color Line Arena as a venue of choice for leading sporting events.
