Mailin Huljus, Center Manager (Formerly: Center Management Trainee)

What are your main reasons for working at ECE?

In center management, work at the shopping center is primarily characterized by close collaboration in small teams. This collaboration and the joint pursuit of goals make working here a lot of fun. In addition, the fact that every day is different and that a lot of decisions can be independently made on-site, such that you are making decisions together with the team about how the center can advance, is really great. The teamwork and variety turn this profession into a passion!

At ECE, I am the center manager of Holsten-Galerie Neumünster. Previously, I completed the trainee program and became familiar with a lot of shopping centers and cities as a result. The 2.5-year-long trainee program brought me to various places throughout Germany. What would you say if you had to sum up ECE in one sentence?

Thanks to the combination of skills across many different disciplines and the high degree of staff commitment, ECE implements successful projects where others tend to fail.

What do you think distinguishes ECE as a company and an employer?

With ECE, I can shape the world of shopping today and tomorrow. ECE is a commercially responsible and entrepreneurially demanding family company. This aspiration, successfully practiced for decades, ensures the success and continued growth of the company, which in turn provides me with a sense of security as an employee. For this, I am expected to be motivated, focused on success, and open to new things. Flexibility is demanded and also afforded, for example in the form of flexible hours and being able to work from home. ECE is the center of my professional life. I know the ropes, and yet every day is unique. So for me, ECE is my professional home.

As part of this, I develop individual lease concepts that fit the right mix of tenants and industries at the center. Commerce is always changing and that is what makes my job particularly exciting. For me, it is important to recognize the latest trends in retail in order to be able to persuasively utilize my knowledge of the market situation in lease negotiations.

ECE is a modern and commercially responsible family company. Working with the market leader in the management of shopping centers in Europe gives me the chance to gain unique experience, to exchange ideas in interdepartmental teams, and to work on my own responsibility. Iris Quilitzsch, OTI Leasing Manager

What do you think distinguishes ECE as a company and an employer?

In my opinion, ECE is in the process of successfully developing a culture similar to a Scandinavian company. To me, this is illustrated through the culture of being on a first-name basis with my colleagues independent of hierarchical levels, the generous benefits package, and the increased focus on a healthy work–life balance. Furthermore, every employee is required to assume responsibility and to look outside the box in order to solve issues – that’s exactly how families operate.
I really appreciate ECE as an employer because I have a lot of flexibility with respect to my working hours and my place of work. This flexibility, which demonstrates the great amount of trust my employer has in me and my work, enables me to maintain a healthy work–life balance that fits my needs.

What exactly do you do at ECE?

As a leasing manager, I work in the area of office space leases (including doctor’s offices) for our national shopping centers. My task is to coordinate and manage leases. On the one hand, I work very closely with our external service provider, who negotiates and concludes lease agreements as an owner representative in coordination with our department. On the other hand, I coordinate the steps that lead up to the conclusion of the lease agreement and manage the development of the rental space before the contract is concluded in order to ensure a smooth transition when the property is handed over to the tenant.
I feel at home with ECE because I can execute office leases (including for doctor’s offices) and the expansion of floor space that often goes along with them in interdisciplinary teams that have a high concentration of specialist expertise.
I really value my job, particularly because I represent a vital link between various areas of ECE and am constantly communicating with different colleagues.
