How we organize ESG at ECE

With our sustainability strategy, we want to contribute with solutions as an integrative part of urban planning to support cities in implementing their climate targets and to make a contribution to sustainable urban development. With clear structures and our own ESG board, we are ideally equipped for this.

Claudia Plath, CFO ECE Group

"Sustainability has finally arrived in finance, and that's a good thing. Establishing green capex and opex based on the taxonomy criteria will have a decisive steering effect on sustainable measures in the real estate industry."

The internal sustainability organization

Clear sustainability structures

ECE has clear sustainability structures. The core is a sustainability team consisting of ten sustainability coordinators and the team leader Sustainability. The latter reports to the Director Sustainability & Corporate Communications, who in turn is the interface to the ECE management. The Sustainability Team and the Director Sustainability & Corporate Communications strategically manage all sustainability activities of ECE and observe the social, economic, and political environment. In addition, they promote the exchange of know-how within the company, coordinate group-wide sustainability projects, and continuously document the progress to the management.

The ESG Board

Only those who allow impulses from outside develop further. Our ESG Board, consisting of representatives from science, business and politics, supports us in this. All new projects are critically discussed there with regard to their ecological, social and economic impact. The board also raises employee awareness of the issue. The insights and suggestions gained from the lively exchange between the board members and the decision-makers of the ECE Group are incorporated into the subsequent decision-making process. Members of this board Polar explorer Arved Fuchs, real estate expert Bärbel Schomberg, Hamburg's former mayor Ole von Beust, Chairman ZIA President Dr. Andreas Mattner. and Dr. Kunibert Lennerts from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.

Bundled expertise in our own specialist area

To develop the most energy-efficient solutions possible for our existing properties and new developments, we also rely on the expertise of our engineers and architects. The Engineering, Environmental & Grants department, which was set up specifically for this purpose, advises on all matters relating to engineering and architectural backgrounds, provides support in committee work, and examines current legislation (e.g. on energy law issues). The experts are also responsible for funding applications for new buildings and existing buildings (e.g. green roof funding) and the certification processes for DGNB, BREEAM and LEED certificates and taxonomy checks. The division is also significantly involved in the development of our energy renovation roadmap and the further development of our photovoltaic strategy.

Andreas Mattner, Vorsitzender ESG-Board, ZIA-Präsident

"The goal of a climate-neutral real estate industry is not a question of if, but of how. Decisive political framework conditions must now be decisively shaped so that we also achieve the right goal."
