At Expo Real: Digitalization and sustainability certificates for ECE projects

Nicole Tuttas (Director Office, Traffic, Industries) and Florian Sauer (Managing Director Office, Traffic, Industries)

At the Real Estate trade fair Expo Real, ECE was awarded various sustainability certifications and a certification for digitalization quality. The office tower WATERMARK in Hamburg's HafenCity, which was developed and constructed by ECE and STRABAG Real Estate, even received double honors: the WiredScore digitalization certification and the DGNB certification – both in gold.

The WiredScore certification is a unique international assessment system of the PropTech company WiredScore for the digital infrastructure of commercial properties. Currently, 1,800 real estate assets in 160 cities have been certified. They include the Empire State Building in New York and “The Shard” in London. The certification provides the required transparency, access to important information about the digital infrastructure of a building, and assesses central elements like connectivity, infrastructure, and potential during the certification process.  WATERMARK was particularly acknowledged for its various building service connections that connect the building in different ways, the accurately sized and water-proof telecommunications room, an emergency power supply which provides protection in case of power failures, the high transparency for cell phone reception by radio field measurements, a large roof for radio system, cell phone, and satellite technology as well as continuous networking through free Wi-Fi in all communal areas.

In addition, WATERMARK was awarded the gold certificate of the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB). The organization particularly praised the extreme flexibility of the office spaces, which enables different room sizes, the extensive transparency of the facade which facilitates the natural lighting of the offices, effective noise insulation to the outside and the inside, and the high-quality building envelope that avoids thermal loss and even makes the building exceed the required energy-efficiency Standards.

The DGNB certification was also presented to SHIPYARD office building which is part of the “Intelligent Quarters” complex, the Hermes logistics center in Hamburg which was taken into operation in 2019, and the 25hours Hotel in Düsseldorf which was opened in 2018.  Both logistics centers stand out with their high energy and CO2 emission savings when generating heat, green roofs and green areas that allow for a 100% infiltration of rainwater, energy-efficient LED lighting, and the integration of electric vehicles.  The certification of the 25hours hotel is based, among others, on the smart use options that enable different building layouts, many barrier-free facilities, and environmental-friendly construction material.
