How we organize ESG at ECE

With our sustainability strategy, we want to contribute with solutions as an integrative part of urban planning to support cities in implementing their climate targets and to make a contribution to sustainable urban development. With clear structures and our own ESG board, we are ideally equipped for this.

Claudia Plath, CFO ECE Group

"Sustainability has finally arrived in finance, and that's a good thing. Establishing green capex and opex based on the taxonomy criteria will have a decisive steering effect on sustainable measures in the real estate industry."

The internal sustainability organization

Clear sustainability structures

A sustainability team and the Director Sustainability & Corporate Communications are responsible for the strategic ESG alignment of the ECE Group. They continuously develop the Group's sustainability strategy based on the ever-changing regulatory and market-specific ESG requirements. They monitor the social, economic and political environment in liability groups and in dialog with relevant stakeholders and use this information to develop strategic guidelines for ECE. They continuously document progress with regard to ESG and report to the Executive Board.

In addition, ESG committees were established in 2023 in the companies ECE Marketplaces, ECE Work & Live and ECE Group Services, with which the sustainability team discusses the strategic approach to the ESG focus topics and continuously develops the ESG objectives of the sustainability strategy.

Together with the Sustainable Operations & ESG service unit, sustainable products and services are also developed for the owners of the shopping centers. In cooperation with ECE Work & Live, ESG codes have also been developed for individual asset classes, which contain specifications and standards for sustainable project development that exceed statutory minimum standards.

Bundled expertise in our own specialist area

To develop the most energy-efficient solutions possible for our existing properties and new developments, we also rely on the expertise of our engineers and architects. The Engineering, Environmental & Grants department, which was set up specifically for this purpose, advises on all matters relating to engineering and architectural backgrounds, provides support in committee work, and examines current legislation (e.g. on energy law issues). The experts are also responsible for funding applications for new buildings and existing buildings (e.g. green roof funding) and the certification processes for DGNB, BREEAM and LEED certificates and taxonomy checks. The division is also significantly involved in the development of our energy renovation roadmap and the further development of our photovoltaic strategy.

ESG on the ECE Supervisory Board

Due to its height of relevance, the topic of ESG has been assigned to the ECE Supervisory Board. This is where all new developments are critically discussed and decided upon in terms of their ecological, social and economic impact. The main person responsible for ESG issues is Advisory Board member Andreas Mattner. Due to his various roles, including as a member of the ESG Board of the ZIA and as former Deputy Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Euref AG for the development of energy and environmentally optimized properties, he has extensive expertise in the area of ESG. As a former managing director, he is also very familiar with our company.
